One of the survivors of a collapsed building in Owerri, capital of Imo State, has expressed disappointment that the state government did not give them attention throughout their stay in hospital.
Narrating his ordeal to Christian Voice, at the weekend, the survivor, Sunday Nwauzor, said that he was inside the building when he heard a sudden crack on the wall.
“I immediately rushed outside, together with two other occupants of the building.”
Nwauzor said that despite their promptness in leaving the building at the time, they still sustained injuries.
He, however, thanked God for saving his life, adding also that he was lucky that his family was resident in his home town.
According to him, life had been tough for him and family, and now he has lost his property in the disaster.
He called for government support, saying that “uptill now nobody, not even government has asked us how we have been fairing despite the promises the state government made to take care of us”.
He said that he paid his hospital bill and lamented that he was starting life all over.
Six persons lost their lives when the three-storey building off Egbu Road and opposite the Fire Service Police Station Owerri, collapsed last Sunday afternoon.
Four persons died instantly while two out of the six injured died in the hospital.
Gov. Rochas Okorocha of the state, who visited the scene, said that he would take drastic measures to checkmate sub-standard buildings in the state regardless of who is involved.
He assured that the state government would take care of the medical bills of the victims.
In two months, Imo has recorded three incidents of collapsed buildings - one each in Umuguma, and Oforola all in Owerri West, and the latest in Owerri Municipal.
The situation has prompted calls that the Owerri Capital Development Authority (OCDA) should be scrapped and the workers dismissed for shoddy performance.
