Recession not death sentence- Dr Ogbonnaya Onu

Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, Minister of Science and Technology, gave Nigerians hope, recently when he declared that recession is not a death sentence.

In a marathon lecture at the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) 29th convocation held in the university's campus.

Dr Onu, a chemical engineer, pointed out that the only solution to the country's economic recession was the diversification of the economy.

This, he said, can be achieved through the study and knowledge of science and technology.

He stated that Nigeria has all it takes to lead the world economically, pointing out its good weather, and lack of ecological challenges, arable landmass, rivers and other infrastructure to its advantage.

Dr. Onu argued that if a small country such as Singapore could build the best airline, best airport and the busiest trading post and enjoy the world's fourth highest per capita income, why can't Nigeria?

According to him, lndia that could not feed her burgeoning population in the past now exports food because of its technological advancement.

Onu, whose lecture was on the theme, “Putting the Recession in recess: The role of science and technology and innovation”, assured that his ministry would work speedily to close all technology gaps in the country and support the private sector for local production.

Obstacles that delay or prevent research he said, would be removed to improve job and wealth creation as well as tackle poverty alleviation, stressing that science, technology and innovation can put recession in recess and diversify the economy to reverse the tread.
