As the 'fight' against the forceful demolition and relocation of the Owerri main market, popularly called Ekeukwu Owerri, continues, elders of Owerri zone in Imo State have resolved to stop the Imo State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, from moving the market.
Handing down the resolution during the week in Owerri, a close source told Christian Voice that apart from the resolution to stop the relocation of the market, the elders have also petitioned the National Human Right Commission, International Criminal Court, the Inspector General of Police and Chief of Army staff, demanding immediate restriction of the governor from relocating the market. They called for thorough investigation on the killing of the 10-year-old boy, Somtochukwu Ibeanusi, during the exercise.
Christian Voice gathered that the elders have also moved to demand for justice on why the governor should demolish a market despite order from a competent High court restraining him from carrying out the forceful exercise that led to loss of human life and properties.
Meanwhile, the one week mourning declared by Owerri elders over the tragedy ends today. Its commenced last Friday with a mass meeting at Ugwu Ekwema, in Owerri municipal, which witnessed a prayer session offered for the repose of the souls of those who died during the forceful demolition of the Ekeukwu Market and the recovery of those currently in hospitals as a result of bullet wounds.
