The University of London gave a monumental recognition to the Igbo language, recently, when its School of Oriented and African Studies (SOAS) inscribed on the wall of the new senate building, the name of an Igbo language lecturer in the institution, first time since the inception of the school.
The wall panel of the Alumni Theater Hall of the senate building was unveiled to the public to mark the centenary celebration of the institution and the name of the lecture, Mr. Godson Echebima, who hails from Imo State, was notably inscribed on it.
The centenary celebration attracted personalities and many alumni of the university. Speaking to a correspondent, Mr. Echebima, who dedicated the honour to the entire Igbo race, described the achievement as a product of hardwork.
While advising Ndigbo to inject interest, dignity and integrity in the teaching and use of Igbo language and culture, he insisted that a people without a language are a people without identity.
Echebima, who has written books in Igbo, including Ako na Uche, Ugonma, Igbo Grammar, among others thanked the Director of SOAS, University of London, Baroness Valerie Amos, for the recognition and the acceptance of seven of his books as texts for the programme as well as for the university library.
Echebima's books have also received approval of the National Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) and are being used in secondary and tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
