Don challenges popular beliefs on fatty foods ... Says red meat, eggs not harmful

A university lecturer, Prof. Ndukwe James Okeudo, has challenged the popular belief that consumption of foods such as red meat and eggs at a certain age was unhealthy for a human being.
Prof Okeudo, a lecturer of Animal science at the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) advised people not to avoid completely all the animal foods said to be containing cholesterol as they contain nutrients and vitamins the body needs.

The lecturer was presenting the 32nd inaugural lecture on “Human food and Healthy living” at FUTO recently.

While he encouraged moderate consumption of meat and egg, he pointed out that the lipo proteins transported into the blood stream thereafter is necessary for the body.

He cited a centurion who consumed three eggs daily from her youth and died after attuning the age of 100 years.

Prof Okeudo stressed the need for more youths to engage in animal agriculture to increase protein production as well as for employment opportunities.

He recognized the high cost of feeds as an impediment but called for local production of livestock feeds using palm kernel and other agro by products.

He urged the government to persuade the nomadic herdsmen to settle for sheep and goat breeding to curb incessant clashes with communities.

Speaking at the occasion, the FUTO vice-chancellor, Prof. Francis Eze, thanked the lecturer for sharing his knowledge with people and urged the university community and others to always attend such programmes to enrich their knowledge.
