The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Imo State Chapter, the State Council of NUP has directed its members not to sign any document against their constitutionally provided pension rights as there is no pensioner in Imo State that is not heavily being owed by the Imo State Government.
In a release made available to newsmen in Imo State and jointly signed by Chief G.U. Ezeji, State Chairman, Evang. Livinus Ashiegbu, state secretary and Comrade Fabian I. Agba, a retired Permanent secretary, the Union made it clear that the present litigation between the NUP and Imo State Government is being handled by the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Imo State Chapter at no costs to either the union or any pensioner in Imo State.
The release said that the NBA gesture was based on humanitarian grounds and in defence of the rule of law.
It further stated that Imo State Council of NUP is not collecting any money for litigation, adding that the legal services are being provided by the NBA free of charge.
It said that the money being collected by the Imo State NUP is for the day-to-day running of the Union since according to the release the Imo State Government has refused to pay to the NUP its check-off dues because of its determination to frustrate and starve the Union and its members to death.
The release read in parts: “The attention of the Imo State NUP has been drawn to the Imo State Government’s attempt to coerce pensioners to sign that they are not part of the present court action against the Imo State Government…”.
The Union expressed its profound gratitude to the Imo NBA for graciously coming to the aid of the crying and suffering Imo Pensioners, and prayed God to bless its leadership and members.
