Knocks for CAN boss ... For allegedly plotting to elongate tenure

Fresh crisis has hit the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) over alleged plans by the president, Dr. Samson Ayokunle, to amend the constitution to ensure a single five-year term, beginning with his administration.

Aggrieved members of CAN who grouped as Reformists In Christendom (RIC) have, however, vowed to resist the move which they described as “dictatorship and impunity in the body of Christ”.

Speaking to newsmen in Ibadan. Oyo State, recently, leaders of the group said that Ayokunle, who is of the Nigerian Baptist Convention, had selected some CAN leaders and asked them to back him on the constitution review at the NEC meeting.

The proposal, according to RIC, failed at NEC, but it was alleged that the president had gone ahead to set up a committee, privately, to review the constitution.

The group wondered why the desperation for constitutional amendment when the house had not united.

The CAN President was also accused of dismantling structures put in place by his predecessors, including 'discarding' the External Auditor who had been on retainership and bringing in another person.

Ayokunle was said to have, at a meeting in February, claimed that he inherited a sick CAN from Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor under whom he served as Vice President.

Efforts to contact the President was abortive but a source close to him challenged anyone with evidence of wrong doing on his part to present it to the world.
