An official of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC)in Imo State has disclosed that the command has no ambulance in its fleet.
The official, Mr. F.E. Evarest, who disclosed this at the flag-off of the Iwuanyanwu National Ambulance in Owerri at the weekend, described the situation as pathetic.
“It is pathetic that we have no single ambulance in Imo state”, said Mr Evarest who represented the commission at the event.
He said that the commission was saving lives in line with its mandate but added that road safety and saving life is the responsibility of everyone.
He highlighted some of the causes of road crashed to include over-speeding over-loading, making or answering calls while diving, excessive intake of alcohol, wrong overtaking, poor state of vehicle, distraction from children or passengers, among others.
He commended the effort of Chief (Engr) Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu who set up the intervention ambulance to assist in reducing the workload of the road safety corps, especially during the “ember months.
Speaking earlier, the founder of the organization, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu said that the major aim of the Iwuanyanwu National Ambulance was to complement the efforts of the FRSC in ensuring that the lives of people, especially accident victims, are saved.
He thanked the volunteers of the organization for accepting to be part of the movement.
The organization also helps victims of insurgency and provides medical and humanitarian support to internally displaced persons (IDPS), the poor and downtrodden in Nigeria and other parts of Africa.
In his address, the National Coordinator of the organization, Mr. Chinedu Nsofor, said the ambulance was dedicated to the advancement of peace, health and safety and to alleviate human suffering.
He listed the numerous achievement of the organization, which was established in 1981, to include blood transfusion centre for Imo, numerous free medical tests and treatments all over the country.
Sponsorship of seminars and sensitization programmes, marine ambulance as well as its spread to other African countries.
He encouraged students and other persons to enroll as volunteers to gain experience and get little stipends.
