Christians have been advised to reject gifts that are capable of mortgaging them to any other faith than Christianity.
The Archbishop of Aba Province and Bishop of Umuahia Anglican Diocese, Most Rev. Ikechi Nwosu, gave the advice while preaching the sermon at the thanksgiving service of the 2017 synod of the Diocese of Owerri last Sunday at Christ's Church, Owerri.
Speaking on the theme of the Synod, “Guard the Gospel”, Archbishop Nwosu said that guarding the gospel requires running away from sin, sustaining corporate Christian Fellowship and encouraging the Holy Spirit to assist Christians in facing the challenges associated with preaching the good news.
The prelate counseled Christians to care for each other and share things spiritually more than physically.
In his remarks, the Bishop of Lafia, Rt. Rev. Godwin Robinson, observed that there were “broken walls” in Nigeria's Christianity which needed to be rebuilt.
He spoke of numerous impediments to the growth of the gospel in Northern Nigeria such as killings, persecution, intimidation and other forms, including arrests of people who attempt to defend themselves.
According to him, with the help of Christians from the East, the gospel will be fruitful one day in the North where he belongs.
Also speaking, the Bishop of Wusasa Bukuru Jos, appealed to Christians to help in extending Christianity to the Sahara at all cost, maintaining that “religion that saves a nation is the old religion”.
He urged the people the guard the gospel.
The opening prayer was said by Rev. Can. Unaze Ukaegbu while Can. Chinemerem Uche conducted the service with Sir Gab Oduah reading the first lesson from Nehamiah 4:6-25.
The chancellor, Hon. Justice Lady Chioma Nwosu-Iheme, handled the second lesson from Ephesians 4:10-16.
